The spread is the difference between the bid (sell) price and the ask (buy) price of a trading instrument. It represents the broker's fee for executing your trade. Every time you open a position, you start with a small loss equal to the spread cost. For example, if EUR/USD has a 1-pip spread and you trade 1 standard lot, you pay $10 just to enter the trade.
The gold spread cost formula is straightforward once you stop thinking in pips. One standard lot of XAUUSD is 100 troy ounces, so every dollar of spread costs $100 per lot:
Example: your broker quotes gold at 3300.00 / 3300.25 — a $0.25 spread. On a 0.10 lot trade: $0.25 × 100 × 0.10 = $2.50 per trade. You pay that the instant you open the position, before price has moved at all.
One thing to watch: this calculator (like most MT4/MT5 brokers) counts gold pips in the 0.01 convention, so a $0.25 spread is entered as 25 pips. If your platform shows the spread as "25", that almost certainly means $0.25, not $25.
Typical XAUUSD spreads by account type, under normal liquidity:
| Account type | Typical spread | Cost per 1.0 lot | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECN / Raw | $0.10 – $0.20 | $10 – $20 | Plus commission, usually $6–7 round turn |
| Standard | $0.20 – $0.35 | $20 – $35 | Commission-free, spread is the whole cost |
| News events | $1.00+ | $100+ | NFP, CPI, FOMC — even on ECN accounts |
Compared with EUR/USD, gold looks expensive: a 1-pip EUR/USD spread costs $10 per lot, while a $0.25 gold spread costs $25. But that comparison is misleading. One lot of gold at $3,300 controls about $330,000 of notional — more than triple EUR/USD's $100,000-ish. As a percentage of position value, gold's spread is actually competitive. The absolute dollar number is just bigger, and that is what hits your P/L on every entry.
The "typical" spread is only half the story. Anyone running a gold EA or scalping XAUUSD manually needs to know when that $0.20 spread turns into $1.50:
Between the New York close and the Tokyo open (roughly 22:00–01:00 GMT), liquidity thins out and spreads routinely double or triple. Many gold scalping EAs trade exactly this window because volatility is low — which means the spread eats a much larger share of each trade's already-small target.
In the seconds around a major US data release, gold spreads can spike to $1.00–$3.00 even at ECN brokers. A position opened or stopped out in that window pays 5–10x the normal cost, and slippage stacks on top. If your EA does not pause around red-folder news, check its backtest assumptions — fixed-spread backtests hide this completely.
Gold frequently gaps over the weekend, and for the first 15–30 minutes after the Sunday open spreads stay wide while liquidity providers re-price. Holding gold trades through the weekend, or letting an EA trade the open, means accepting both gap risk and the worst spreads of the week.
A single $2.50 spread cost looks harmless. Multiply it by a scalping EA's trade frequency and it stops being harmless:
Over a 22-day trading month that is $275 — paid before a single trade has made a profit. On a $5,000 account, the spread alone consumes 5.5% of equity per month. A gold scalping strategy averaging $5 profit per trade needs half its gross profit just to cover the spread at standard-account pricing.
This is why the same gold EA can be profitable on an ECN account and a slow bleed on a standard account. Before judging any high-frequency strategy, run its trade count and average lot size through this calculator with your broker's real spread — not the backtest's fixed assumption.
