How much do trading bots cost? In the forex market, an EA can be free, cost $149, sell for $1,350, or carry a price above $10,000. Those figures all appeared in current MQL5 listings, but none of them tells you what the bot will cost to run for a year.
The forex EA price is only the first line on the bill. Depending on how you trade, you may also pay for a continuous runtime, spreads, commissions, slippage, data, support, or a prop firm challenge. A cheap license can become an expensive setup, while a high price still proves nothing about performance.
Quick answer: Forex trading bots range from free downloads to five-figure listings. Current MQL5 examples run from $0 to $30,000. Your real first-year cost may also include hosting, data, development, support, prop firm fees, spreads, commissions, swaps, and slippage. Price alone does not show whether an EA will be profitable.

Forex EA Price Comparison: 2026 Cost Ranges
The official MQL5 Market pages checked for this article do not provide a market-wide average forex EA price. The Market allows free products, sets a $30 minimum for paid products, and also carries EAs priced above $10,000 (Market rules). Discounts and rentals also make a simple average based on visible listings a poor description of what buyers actually pay.
For this guide, we checked the displayed prices on official marketplace, hosting, freelance, and prop firm pages. We recorded the page and date, treated promotional prices as temporary, and ignored every seller performance claim. A listing can prove what the seller charges. It cannot prove that the strategy works.
This forex EA price comparison uses shopping budgets, not market-wide sales data. The bands are not a median, a quality score, or a claim about what most buyers pay.
| Illustrative budget | Official examples checked July 29, 2026 | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | MQL5 has a free EA directory | Strategy type, lot sizing, grid or Martingale logic |
| Under $100 | Market rules set the paid minimum at $30; Freelance requests started at $30 | Update history, scope, account limits, support |
| $100-$500 | Market samples at $149, $249, and $299; a Freelance request at $100-$200 | Verifiable live evidence, drawdown, refund or rental terms |
| $500-$1,500 | Market samples at $1,199 and $1,350; a Freelance request at $600-$900 | Whether the evidence and scope justify the price |
| $1,500-$9,999 | A Market sample at $2,499 | Source-code ownership, service scope, lock-in, written acceptance tests |
| $10,000+ | A Market sample at $30,000 | Whether the price has any evidence-based justification |
On July 29, 2026, MQL5 had a free EA directory alongside examples listed at $149, $249, $299, $1,199, $1,350, $2,499, and $30,000. These are dated price samples, not evidence of sales, quality, or profitability.
Before paying, use our EA buyer's guide and EA scam checklist. A price tag is a sales decision. It is not a backtest, a live track record, or risk control.
One-Time Forex EA Price or Subscription?
One-time license
In MQL5 Market, products can only be delivered as compiled EX4 or EX5 files. A purchase gives the buyer personal use rights, not source-code ownership. Market rules include free product upgrades, but that is not a promise of new features forever. Source code and update terms for products sold elsewhere depend on the contract.
MQL5 records the purchase in the buyer's account, while each activation is tied to a hardware and operating-system configuration. Reinstalling an operating system or changing hardware can require another activation. Sellers set between 5 and 20 activations. A one-time license is easier to budget, but long-term use still depends on compatibility, remaining activations, and maintenance.
Rental or subscription
Rentals lower the upfront cost and can be useful for testing. They get expensive when the months pile up. One current MQL5 product page, for example, states a $1,350 purchase price, a $299 one-month rental, and a $785 six-month rental (page checked July 29, 2026). That is one product, not a market average, but the arithmetic is useful:
- Twelve separate $299 months would cost $3,588.
- A six-month rental renewed twice would cost $1,570.
- The lifetime purchase is $1,350 at the listed price.
Rental still may be the better choice if you only need a short evaluation window. Do not compare today's payment. Compare the cost over the period you are likely to use it.
Check what happens to open positions before a rental ends. MQL5 Market allows rental products and prohibits sellers from adding third-party license-control systems, but its Market rules do not promise that open positions will be closed for you at expiry. Close the positions or transfer their management before authorization ends, following the product documentation. Products sold outside MQL5 can use different authorization and shutdown terms, so read the specific contract.
How Much Does Custom EA Development Cost?
Custom development has the widest range because "build me an EA" can mean ten lines of entry logic or a multi-symbol system with a news filter, licensing server, panel, recovery after restarts, and months of testing.
The live MQL5 Freelance board illustrates why there is no fixed custom EA cost. On July 29, 2026, visible requests included a $100-$200 XAUUSD EMA trading EA and EA modification work starting at $100. Listings change constantly, so these examples cannot establish an industry average. A quote only becomes meaningful after the rules are written down.
Budget for more than coding:
- Strategy specification and edge cases
- EA development and source code
- Backtesting and bug fixing
- Forward testing on demo or a small live account
- Documentation, installation, and post-delivery support
- Later changes when broker conditions or platform builds change
A development quote may cover coding alone or include testing, revisions, documentation, and support. The contract decides. "EA delivered" is not the same as "strategy validated," and a developer can correctly code a trading idea that has no edge.
If your rules are clear and you need ownership or broker-specific behavior, custom EA development can make sense. If the strategy still contains phrases such as "enter when momentum looks strong," you are not ready to request a fixed quote.
Hidden Forex Robot Costs Buyers Forget
1. VPS hosting
An EA needs an active MetaTrader runtime whenever it may trade. MetaQuotes currently lists its integrated VPS at $15 for one month, $42 for three months, and $153 for twelve months (official pricing, checked July 29, 2026). Other providers charge different amounts.
You may not need a VPS during demo testing. Unattended live trading does need a continuous runtime, but that can be your own computer, broker-provided hosting, MetaQuotes VPS, or another VPS provider. The $153 plan is one option, not a mandatory charge. Our VPS setup guide explains the operational side.
2. Spread, commission, swap, and slippage
When trade size and execution conditions are similar, more trades generally mean more accumulated spread and commission. The amount still depends on the broker, account type, instrument, and fill quality. MetaTrader 5 takes the test spread from historical data and lets users configure commissions; tests run under better conditions than the live account will understate costs.
These costs cannot be reduced to one universal monthly number. Export the EA's expected trades and lots, then model your broker's actual pricing. Start with our guide to spread and slippage and rerun the backtest under worse-than-average conditions.
3. Historical data and testing tools
MetaTrader 5 synchronizes and downloads the history available from the trading server for Strategy Tester runs. That documentation describes the platform download process, not the price or completeness of every broker's history. Third-party tick data and testing software may cost extra, while MQL5 Cloud Network optimization charges for consumed computing resources. Not every EA needs those paid options.
A daily-chart EA and a one-minute scalper do not have the same data requirements. Paying for premium tick data cannot remove overfitting when a strategy only looks good after repeated tuning on the same historical period.
4. Prop firm challenge fees
If the EA is meant for a prop firm, the challenge is part of the acquisition cost. The5ers' official Bootcamp page listed a $100,000 account at $95 upfront plus $205 after success, $300 in total, on July 22, 2026 (official fee table). When checked on July 29, FTMO advertised a €439 special price for a $100,000 Standard Challenge only if the customer did not already have one active (official offer page).
These are examples, not a universal range, and refund rules differ. The5ers charges $95 to enter this Bootcamp program and the remaining $205 only after success and entry to the funded stage. FTMO's current 2-Step page says the fee is reimbursed with the first Reward after the trader becomes verified; its 1-Step page labels the fee non-refundable. Check the exact program and current EA rules before paying. Our six-firm comparison is a starting point.
5. Setup, presets, and support
Ask whether the price includes set files, installation help, updates, and help after a broker suffix or symbol name breaks the setup. A cheap EA with paid setup, paid presets, and no written support period is not cheap.
Source code matters too. MQL5 Market requires compiled EX4/EX5 delivery and grants personal use rights rather than source-code ownership. Products sold elsewhere follow their own contracts. A compiled license may be fine for ordinary use, but it limits your options if another developer must maintain or extend the EA later.
6. Trading capital and losses
Capital is not a software fee, but it is money exposed to the strategy. The minimum sensible account size depends on the broker's minimum lot, stop distance, number of simultaneous positions, and risk per trade. There is no honest universal answer such as "$500 is enough for every EA."
Use a demo first. Then calculate whether the smallest tradable lot keeps risk inside your limit. If it does not, the account is underfunded for that EA, regardless of what the sales page says. Our position size calculator can check the numbers.
Calculate Your Total Forex Trading Bot Cost
Use this before buying:
First-year fixed spending = EA license or 12 months of subscription + the runtime you actually buy + paid data/testing/setup/development + prop firm fees you actually pay
Keep spreads, commissions, swaps, and slippage in a separate variable-cost line because they depend on turnover.
Here is a simple example using public prices, not a performance forecast:
| Item | Live account | Start Bootcamp | Pass and reach funded stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time EA license | $299 | $299 | $299 |
| Twelve-month MetaTrader VPS | $153 | $153 | $153 |
| Paid data/tools | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| The5ers Bootcamp fee | $0 | $95 | $300 |
| First-year fixed spending | $452 | $547 | $752 |
Now divide fixed cost by the capital allocated to the strategy:
Cost-recovery return = first-year fixed cost / allocated capital
On a $1,000 live account, $452 equals 45.2% of starting capital before trading costs. On a $10,000 account, it is 4.52%. Starting the Bootcamp example raises total spending to $547; the additional $205 is paid only after success, bringing the example to $752.
This calculation does not tell you whether the EA will make money. It tells you whether your budget is upside down. If the system must produce an exceptional return merely to repay its tools, wait.
A buying checklist that filters out bad deals
Confirm these points before paying. Ask the seller about licensing, support, and delivery scope; for backtesting claims, inspect the report settings and rerun the test under your own broker conditions where possible:
- Is the price a purchase, rental, subscription, or revenue share?
- How many accounts and activations are included?
- Does it require a specific broker, account type, symbol suffix, or leverage?
- Are updates, set files, and support included?
- Can you test a demo version or rent it before buying?
- Is there independently verifiable live history, including equity and drawdown?
- Does the seller's backtest report disclose its commission and spread model, and was the strategy stress-tested with slippage or worse execution conditions?
- Does it use grid, Martingale, recovery sizing, or hidden stop losses?
- Is the EA allowed under your prop firm's current rules?
- What is the full 12-month cost, and what return is required just to recover it?
Walk away from guaranteed profit, countdown discounts that keep resetting, screenshots without investor access, or a seller who will only reveal the settings after payment. We cover the verification process in 10 red flags of EA scams.
When to buy, subscribe, or build
Buy a one-time EA when the strategy is already documented, the evidence is checkable, the license terms fit your accounts, and you expect to use it long enough for a purchase to beat rental costs.
Use a membership or subscription when you value ongoing updates, access to several tools, or a lower initial commitment. Compare the 12-month total and cancellation rules. You can review FXTool's current options on the membership page.
Commission a custom EA when you already own clear trading rules, need source-code control or special integrations, and can budget for testing and maintenance. Paying a developer to discover the strategy while coding it is usually an expensive way to learn that the rules were never complete.
If you want an off-the-shelf option, compare the evidence and license terms in the FXTool marketplace. If no existing product matches the rules you actually trade, use the custom development page to define the job before requesting a quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much do trading bots cost?
Forex trading bots range from free downloads to products priced above $10,000. Current MQL5 examples include $0, $149, $299, $1,350, $2,499, and $30,000 products. The useful comparison is the first-year total: license or subscription, runtime, trading costs, optional data or support, and any prop firm fee.
What is a typical forex EA price?
The official MQL5 pages checked for this article do not provide a market-wide average forex EA price. MQL5 permits free products and sets a $30 minimum for paid listings, while a current example is listed at $30,000. Treat $0, under $100, $100-$500, $500-$1,500, $1,500-$9,999, and $10,000+ as shopping bands rather than a statistical market distribution.
How much does a forex robot cost per month?
A one-time license may have no software fee after purchase, while rentals and subscriptions renew monthly or annually. The example in this guide lists a one-month rental at $299. Recurring operating costs may also include hosting, spreads, commissions, and swaps, depending on the account and trading activity.
Do forex robots charge monthly fees?
Some do, some do not. Sellers use one-time licenses, monthly rentals, annual subscriptions, and other billing models. Even a one-time EA may still create recurring costs through spreads, commissions, swap, and the continuous runtime used for unattended trading.
Is a free EA really free?
The file may be free. Running it with real money is not. You still bear trading costs and losses, and you may need hosting. Free EAs are useful for learning installation and testing, but they need the same strategy, risk, and execution checks as paid products.
Is custom EA development worth it?
It can be, if you have precise rules and need ownership, special risk controls, or integration work. It is poor value when the strategy is vague or untested. Write the specification and acceptance tests first; then compare the quote with buying and adapting an existing EA.
How much capital do I need for an EA?
Calculate it from risk, not the EA's price. Use the broker's minimum lot, the EA's stop distance, maximum simultaneous positions, and your allowed loss per trade. If the smallest lot already risks too much, increase capital, use a suitable cent account, or reject the EA.
How Much Do Trading Bots Cost in Total?
The answer to "how much do trading bots cost?" is not just the checkout price. Ask what the full forex EA setup will cost for 12 months and what evidence justifies that bill.
A $299 EA plus a $153 VPS is already $452 before one trade is placed. Optional data, support, or a prop firm challenge can raise the total further, depending on the program and refund terms. Put that figure next to the capital you plan to allocate. If the required cost-recovery return looks unrealistic, do not force the purchase to make sense.
Risk disclosure: Forex and CFDs are high-risk products, and trading can result in the loss of all funds in the trading account. An EA automates rules; it does not remove market, execution, leverage, or model risk. Prices and prop firm terms cited above were checked on July 29, 2026 and may change.
